Two suspected hunters, who had been found in possession of the carcass of sarus crane, the state fowl of Uttar Pradesh, in Greater Noida’s Rabupura, had been booked on Friday, police mentioned, including that one of the suspects, Risiya (35), has been arrested whereas his confederate Kamal managed to flee.
With inhabitants of the sarus crane dwindling, in 2014, it was designated the state fowl, highlighting the necessity for conserving its inhabitants and defending its habitat.
Police mentioned inspections had been being carried out alongside Chachura border on Friday following a tip-off and an accused was nabbed from the spot. A case was registered below the provisions of Wildlife Safety Act, 1972, police mentioned.
Station home officer, Rabupura police station, Sudhir Kumar mentioned, “Throughout an inspection on the Charchura border, two males on a two-wheeler with registration quantity UP13AP0979 had been intercepted and a lifeless sarus crane was recovered from their possession. In the course of the interrogation, accused Risiya revealed that the duo had noticed the crane in a jungle close to Myana village and hunted the fowl by placing a noose round its neck.”
“Whereas we had been profitable in nabbing Risiya, his aide managed to flee from the inspection spot. An FIR has been registered towards the duo below part 9/51 of the Wildlife Safety Act, 1972 and additional interrogation and investigation is underway”, SHO Rabupura added.
Notably, sarus cranes are protected in India below the Wildlife Safety Act which got here into impact in 1972. The legislation prohibits capturing or searching any species below the Act, apart from accredited scientific analysis or in case of risk to human life.
